Most goal apps run on guilt. Broken streaks, red marks, the sense that you've let the app down. Motiv starts from the opposite premise: showing up is the win. You shape your own coach, set goals you can actually reach, and get scheduled voice check-ins to stay on track.

The Context

The Context

The client came with a defined brief and a target audience: Gen Z.

Looking at existing goal and habit apps, the core problem was consistent: they push people to constantly do something and log it. Streaks, daily check-ins, the pressure to report what you did and didn't do. Miss once and the app turns into a source of guilt.

We also had an audience insight: Gen Z heavily consumes motivational content. That gave us a direction. The product wasn't going to be another tracker, and it had to speak to that audience natively.

Each of these questions shaped a part of the experience. The coach's conversational logic and responses were defined by the product lead; my focus was the experience around it, how the coaching surfaces in the product and how it feels to use.

Onboarding that adapts

Onboarding that adapts

The AI experience begins before the paywall, giving people a real feel for the product before any commitment. Rather than filling out a static form, users set their goal through a live conversation with the coach, guided by quick suggestion chips and gentle reframing when the wording needs it.

The same encouraging tone carries through every step, turning even routine moments like entering a name into small points of motivation.

Notification preferences are handled with the same care: the app asks how often users want to hear from it upfront, so check-ins always feel intentional rather than intrusive.

The coach you shape

The coach you shape

Not everyone responds to the same encouragement. Some need a coach who's direct, others want one who listens and goes easy, so the tone is yours to set: name your coach, pick a voice, choose a character that fits how you actually stay motivated.

Not everyone responds to the same encouragement. Some need a coach who's direct, others want one who listens and goes easy, so the tone is yours to set: name your coach, pick a voice, choose a character that fits how you actually stay motivated.

That coach lives on a home screen built around one task: talk. No crowded dashboard, just a calm space to get motivated or think something through, with your next call always in reach. The greeting adapts to each visit and leans into the audience, celebrating the act of showing up rather than adding pressure.

Motivation that reaches you

Motivation that reaches you

Consistency without the burden of logging. Instead of asking users to check in, the coach reaches out. You schedule motivation calls at the times that fit your day, set them to repeat, and the coach calls to keep you moving. No streaks to maintain, no daily form to fill.

There's no streak system, but completed calls are marked on the calendar with a flame, keeping that small sense of momentum without the pressure of a number you can break. The calendar makes it easy to see when calls are coming up, and just as easy to edit or reschedule them.

Even the empty states stay encouraging, so a day without a call reads as "keep going" rather than a gap you failed to fill.

Goals that orbit

Goals that orbit

Goals aren't a checklist you fall behind on. They orbit a central main goal and grow brighter as you work on them with the coach. Progress is something you watch expand, not a row of red marks. The calendar tracks calls and active days without turning a missed day into failure.

The orbit is also a way to keep goals few and reachable. It's playful to scroll through, but capping how many can sit in orbit keeps ambition from piling up. Try to add too many and the app gently nudges you to delete one or keep building on what's already there, so progress stays step by step.

The decision I'm most proud of came from the research. Goal apps lean on nudging and list-style tracking, the constant logging of did it, didn't do it, and the guilt that follows a missed day. Naming that pattern early gave the whole product its direction: build for support, not pressure.

Working toward an MVP meant making real trade-offs. We cut features that carried heavy engineering cost and resisted the urge to build a crowded app, staying focused on a single core task instead. The constraint kept the product honest.
